The Yeon Deung Hoe, or Lotus Lantern Festival, is a traditional South Korean event with Buddhist origins that has evolved into a cultural festival for everyone. With a history spanning over 1,200 years, it has been recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and Korea’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The festival attracts more than 300,000 native Korean and 50,000 foreign visitors each year. It embodies the Buddhist idea of interconnectedness, where individuals come together as one, united by the light of the lanterns. The festival is held annually on the weekend before Buddha’s birthday, which falls on April 8th according to the lunar calendar. In 2023, the festival will take place from May 19th to May 21st.
