What is Ottchil(lacquer)?
Lacquer is a word formed by combining the pure Korean word 'ot' (옻, meaning lacquer tree) and the Chinese character 'chil' (漆, meaning lacquer). Lacquer is sap extracted from the trunk and branches of the lacquer tree, used as a coating material and for medicinal purposes. It has been used in Korea since the 1st century BC. Lacquer is the most stable and strong natural compound among various coatings existing in nature.
It is not corroded by various acids and alkalis, and is a durable substance with excellent resistance to salt, heat, water, insects, and decay, as well as insulation properties. It is especially known for its anti-cancer, anti inflammatory, and antibacterial effects, making it widely used in tableware and daily craft items. Traditional lacquering can only be completed after going through several refining processes and repeating very meticulous coating and polishing work.
