Work Description
"Art is not a handicraft, it is the transmission of feeling the artist has experienced." - Leo Tolstoy
The essence of art lies in the delicate balance between subjectivity and objectivity, nature and reason, unconsciousness and consciousness. In this process, the artist's daily experiences become the core elements of creation.
From childhood to the present, living in an environment surrounded by mountains, these landscapes have been an inseparable part of my visual experience. This background is the source of why I named this work 'Jin Kyeong San Su'.
'Jin Kyeong' means capturing the essential beauty of an object beyond its superficial form and color. It's a process of exploring the true nature that exists beyond mere appearance. While the beauty of nature exists in itself, artistic beauty is born anew through human creative acts.
Lacquer craft embodies both these forms of beauty. It's because the work is born from the purity of materials obtained from nature, combined with the artist's contemplation and sincerity. The deep color of lacquer emerging from layers of coating seems to contain the stories of my life. This is why I am captivated by lacquer work.
In modern society, everyday crafts have become mediums expressing individual taste and aesthetics, beyond being mere tools. Crafts play a role in projecting our inner world outward. Through the Jin Kyeong San Su tray, inspired by our beautiful landscapes, I hope to add a new sensibility to your space.
What is Ottchil(lacquer)?
Lacquer is a word formed by combining the pure Korean word 'ot' (옻, meaning lacquer tree) and the Chinese character 'chil' (漆, meaning lacquer). Lacquer is sap extracted from the trunk and branches of the lacquer tree, used as a coating material and for medicinal purposes. It has been used in Korea since the 1st century BC. Lacquer is the most stable and strong natural compound among various coatings existing in nature.
It is not corroded by various acids and alkalis, and is a durable substance with excellent resistance to salt, heat, water, insects, and decay, as well as insulation properties. It is especially known for its anti-cancer, anti inflammatory, and antibacterial effects, making it widely used in tableware and daily craft items. Traditional lacquering can only be completed after going through several refining processes and repeating very meticulous coating and polishing work.
