Brand Introduction
Kang Ryu works with clay—a material that holds both softness and strength, shaped by water and transformed by fire. Drawn to its dual nature, she explores how clay becomes solid yet fragile, echoing the human condition. Her practice centers on creating artificial natural forms—ceramic objects that contain soil, water, plants, and other organic elements. Within these vessels, nature continues to move, shift, and sound. For Kang, ceramics are not static objects, but living spaces where material, time, and sound interact. Through these works, she blurs the boundary between nature and artifice, stillness and transformation.
Work Description
witherless flower is a ceramic sculpture that evokes the form and presence of a living flower, yet resists the passage of time. Though artificially crafted, it recalls nature through its shape and composition—and only finds completion when combined with real soil. Once soft clay, the piece is reborn through fire, and now holds earth once again, as if it has grown from the ground itself.
The work stems from a personal memory. In Kang Ryu’s mother’s yard, her grandmother once nurtured a vibrant garden. As the flowers withered and her grandmother fell ill, the sight of fading blooms became a quiet source of grief. Since then, fresh flowers were no longer welcomed in the home.
witherless flower is a response to that memory—an unwithering offering. A flower that holds presence without fading, crafted from clay and fire, rooted in both memory and earth.
